Democratic strategist James Carville argued the “simplest and most direct” explanation for President Donald Trump’s actions thus far in office is that he “hates” his own country.
In a video for Politicon, Carville accused Trump of deliberately trying to “harm” the United States with moves like his tariffs on Canada and Mexico and his explosive meeting in front of cameras with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In Carville’s nearly-10 minute video ripping into Trump, he spent the first half continuing a previous rant where he claimed Trump was mentally deteriorating and theorized it could be the result of an infection like syphilis. In his latest rant, Carville accused the president of going “literally crazy,” but he then pivoted to another explanation for Trump’s actions: that he doesn’t “like” the United States.
Carville said:
“He’s actually trying to harm the United Sates. Now, I’ve seen people in my life that have harmed the United States. I think the Iraq War, which I was vehemently opposed to, I thought that was detrimental to the interests of our state. However, I never would for one minute thought that George W. Bush wanted to harm United States. I don’t think Trump likes the United States. I honestly believe that the most compelling answer to all of this is he doesn’t like this country. He certainly doesn’t like the Constitution. He doesn’t even try to hide that. So can you love the country and not love the Constitution? I’ll leave that to other people. He certainly doesn’t like our alliances. He certainly doesn’t like the people that we form relationships with and friendships through the years… We know that. We know he doesn’t believe in separation of powers. We know he believes he’s above the law because he told us that. We know he believes that we’re a terrible country with terrible people. We know that.”
Carville went on to blast Trump’s administration for not “caring” about inflation despite the economy being central to Trump’s campaign, and he claimed again that the “simplest” explanation for everything is that Trump ran for president of a country he doesn’t “like.”
Carville argued:
“The deterioration, the love dictatorships, the willingness and joy of identifying with some of the great criminal regimes in the world, turning your back over allies and friends we’ve had over a period of time to turning back at our Constitution, they are ongoing and could be successful attempt to wreck the United States economy — What could explain all of that? I’m open. I’ll read your comments. I think the simplest and most direct explanation is the present of the United States hates the United States.”
