There’s bad news for mobile users who recharge for data. India’s largest telecom operator Reliance Jio has discontinued its Rs 249 prepaid plan, which offered 1 GB of data per day. After them Bharti Airtel also scrapped a similar plan. Industry executives and analysts believe that Vodafone Idea (Vi) may follow suit shortly.
Which Plan Of Jio And Airtel Be Available?
This move means that users will now have to start with plans offering at least 1.5 GB of daily data, which are more expensive than the earlier entry-level plans. According to media reports this strategy will help telecom operators raise ARPU (Average Revenue Per User), especially since no major tariff hike is expected before next year.
How Expensive Jio, Airtel Data Plans Are Now?
According to an ET report, Jio’s new base data plan (1.5 GB/day) now costs Rs 299, which is 17% more expensive than the discontinued Rs 249 plan. Airtel’s comparable 1.5 GB/day plan is priced even higher at Rs 319. For now, Vodafone Idea continues to offer its Rs 299 plan with 1 GB/day, though the company did not respond to an email query regarding its future plans.
Brokerage house JM Financial, in a report published before Airtel’s latest move, had predicted that both Airtel and Vi likely to follow Jio in withdrawing their 1 GB/day plans (currently available at Rs 299 for 28 days). The report stated that these operators are focusing on tariff correction across the industry to improve return on capital.
