Brief Scorecard: Rajasthan Royals 216 for 7 (Samson 74, Smith 69, Archer 27*, Sam Curran 3-33) beat Chennai Super Kings 200 for 6 (du Plessis 72, Watson 33, Dhoni 29*, Tewatia 3-37) by 16 runs
Rajasthan Royals (RR) started their IPL 2020 campaign on a rousing note as they defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 16 runs in their opening clash. Sanju Samson (74 off 32 balls), Steve Smith (69 off 47 balls), Rahul Tewatia (3/37) and Jofra Archer (27 off 8 balls, 1/26) were the standout players from the RR camp in this contest.
After being invited to bat first, India U-19 star Yashashvi Jaiswal who made his IPL debut on Tuesday opened the RR innings along with skipper Steve Smith. However, the youngster failed to make a mark as he was dismissed on 6 by Deepak Chahar.
After Jaiswal’s dismissal, Sanju Samson joined Smith in the middle. The duo went on to add 121 runs for the second wicket, before Samson was removed by Lungi Ngidi in the 12th over.
After Samson’s dismissal, wickets kept falling for RR at regular intervals, with Smith remaining firm at one end.
Jofra Archer then smashed four consecutive sixes in the final over of the RR innings as the team posted a gigantic 216/7 at the end of 20 overs.
Murali Vijay along with Shane Watson started the CSK chase on a good note as the pair added 56 for the first wicket.
However, CSK suffered a collapse right after the powerplay overs as they were four down in 10 overs.
At the end, CSK managed to add 200 on the board, falling short by just 16 runs in the high scoring encounter at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
