Mumbai batsman, Shreyas Iyer, has been called up by the Indian team management as cover for skipper Virat Kohli, who is nursing a shoulder injury suffered during the drawn third Test in Ranchi, Cricinfo reported on Thursday.

Iyer, 22, is an aggressive batsman, who was the leading Ranji Trophy run-getter in the 2015-16 season, and was Mumbai’s highest run-scorer last season, when they lost to Gujarat in the final.

The India skipper fell heavily on his right shoulder and spent a lot of time off the field, with Ajinkya Rahane leading the team. However, Kohli came out to bat at his usual No 4 spot, though he fell cheaply again.

On Thursday, Kohli did not bat and only threw under-arm during the fielding drills at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala.

However, Kohli still has a full day to see if he has recovered to feature in the match. But it remains to be seen whether the batsman will take the risk, considering the IPL starts on April 5 and will be followed by the ICC Champions Trophy.
