MUMBAI — The Academy Award-winning composer (he won Best Sound Mixing for Slumdog Millionaire) Resul Pookutty is in uncharted territory.
For the first time, he has taken up sound mixing for a TV show – Tim Sebastian's debate-format series, The Outsider. The show is already being talked about for apparently being similar to the hugely popular show, Satyamev Jayate. While talking about it, Resul – quite surprisingly – hits out at the Aamir Khan show, calling it "doctored."
"Ours (The Outsider) is a live show. For two hours, we don't stop or interfere (with the shooting). But Satyamev Jayate was a completely doctored show. A lot of postproduction work was done on the sound. The show was treated just like a film – sound (mixing) is handled in a way that you can, sort of, emotionally blackmail (sic) the audience," he says.
Resul insists that "we are doing no such manipulation" on The Outsider, which is produced by Sobo Films (owned by Vikas Gulati and Smriti Shinde, the daughter of current Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde).
So, what's post-production (regarding the sound) like on The Outsider? "Some sound and post-production work has been done, but that's only so that it matches international TV standards. We are not doing anything in postproduction to emotionally manipulate (viewers). We are staying true to the idea of debate," he says.
About his move to the small screen, Resul says, "I dabbled with TV in the early part of my career. With this show, at first, I was wary. Then, they showed me a few episodes of Doha Debates (a TV show chaired by Tim Sebastian and funded by the Qatar Foundation). I started by helping out Kokkie (Vikas). It's not a show that's simply recorded and edited. It's a live debate, filmed over two hours. I thought I wanted to take up the challenge."
The Outsider will air on August 25. When contacted, Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India (the channel that telecast Satyamev Jayate), did not wish to comment.
