Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the prestigious Leadership Summit 2025 of a national daily today, announcing a major government drive to return over Rs 104,000 crore in unclaimed assets to their rightful owners, primarily poor and middle-class families.
The Prime Minister framed the initiative as a testament to the strengthened trust between the government and the populace, a stark contrast to the historical perception of “one-way traffic,” where citizens expected no reciprocation after engaging with the state.
PM Modi highlighted that the success of the government’s efforts is evident in its campaign to identify and repatriate these long-lost funds.
“It was always believed that once something was given to the government, it was a one-way traffic with nothing coming back,” the Prime Minister stated. He emphasized that the situation changes “when trust between the government and the people becomes strong,” with results made evident through various campaigns.
The Prime Minister provided a surprising breakdown of the massive unclaimed sum:
Rupees 78,000 crore is lying unclaimed in the country’s banks.
Rupees 14,000 crore with insurance companies.
Rupees 3,000 crore with mutual fund companies.
Rupees 9,000 crore in unclaimed dividends.
“It would be surprising to know that 78 thousand crore rupees lie unclaimed in banks, 14 thousand crore rupees with insurance companies, three thousand crore rupees with mutual fund companies, and 9 thousand crore rupees in dividends, all unclaimed,” the Prime Minister noted.
He was quick to stress the ownership of this enormous wealth. “This money belongs to poor and middle-class families,” he asserted, adding, “and therefore the government is working to return it to its rightful owners.”
To expedite the process, the government has launched a campaign involving special camps across the nation to trace the rightful beneficiaries.
“Our government is making efforts to return this wealth in the country to its rightful owners,” the Prime Minister explained. “So far, special camps have been set up in nearly 500 districts to identify the owners of this money, and we have returned several thousand crore rupees to them,” he said.
He wrapped up by stressing the greater significance of the effort beyond mere monetary returns.
“This is not just about returning property; it’s about restoring trust,” he said, signaling the government’s commitment to citizen welfare and financial justice.
