The Food and Drug Administration, a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, or US FDA found salmonella bacterium in at least three batches of MDH Sambhar Masala.
Salmonella bacteria usually live in animal and human intestines. Salmonella infection called salmonellosis is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract.
The US FDA revealed that the three lots of MDH Sambhar Masala were taken off the shelves earlier this week after the test results revealed the product contained salmonella, according to an Indian Express report.
The MDH Sambhar Masala was tested by FDA to learn if it contains salmonella and also urged the consumers to return their packet of spice to the place of purchase for a full refund, according to an Economic Times report.
Salmonella poisoning is often linked to contaminated water or foods. The symptoms of salmonellosis include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths in the United States every year. The CDC website explains people with diarrhea due to a salmonella infection usually recover completely, although it may be several months before their bowel habits are entirely normal.
