Nottingham, ENGLAND – India thrashed England in the first ODI at Trent Bridge – chasing down 269 with 9.5 overs remaining.

The tourists recorded the eight-wicket victory thanks to star performances from Kuldeep Yadav and Rohit Sharma.

Yadav produced one of the great one-day bowling spells to take 6-25 in 10 overs as India restricted England to 268 all out with one ball to spare in their 50 overs.

He took the wickets of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root at the top of the order before dismissing Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler who each scored half centuries.

Sharma got India’s reply off to a flier along with fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan, putting on 59 for the opening stand before Dhawan was caught by Adil Rashid off the bowling of Moeen Ali.

That brought Virat Kohli to the crease who struck 75 before being stumped by Jos Buttler off Rashid’s bowling.

But Sharma, who finished 137 not out from 114 balls, steered India home and gave them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

It’s England’s first ODI defeat of the summer after they whitewashed Australia 5-0.

India won the three-match T20 series 2-1 and the two sides will also play five Test matches after the 50-over games have taken place.
