Tamil singer Kovan of Makkal Kalai Ilakiyam arrested for criticising Centre, PM Modi

Kovan was arrested by Trichy Police for criticising PM Modi, CM Edappadi K Palanisamy and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam during the recent protest in Tamil Nadu for Cauvery Water Management Board (CMB).

Kovan was arrested by Trichy Police for criticising PM Modi, CM Edappadi K Palanisamy and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam during the recent protest in Tamil Nadu for Cauvery Water Management Board (CMB).

The Rama Rajya Ratha Yatra commenced from Ayodhya on February 13 and entered Tamil Nadu on March 23. Complaints were filed against the singer after he criticised the Rath Yatra in one of his recent song.

Trichy Police entered his home and forcibly arrested him. The singer was arrested based on a complaint given by district secretary of the BJP's youth wing, Gowtham. The song, according to the complainant insults the Prime Minister.

In the song, Kovan criticises the Modi government and calls the government corrupt and appeals to the people to ensure that the BJP does not come back to power in the next general elections. In the song, the singer has also called OPS and EPS the two slippers of the Modi government.

Kovan was arrested in 2014 on sedition charges for criticising the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on her liquor policy but the charges were later dropped.

Kovan has been booked under IPC sections 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups), Section 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and, 505(1b) (Whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquillity).
