New Delhi: Jay Shah, the son of BJP Chief Amit Shah, said today that he will sue The Wire, a website, for Rs 100 crore for an article that he says defames him. He has also said he will sue any organisation that discusses or references the allegations.

Piyush Goyal said allegations against BJP chief Amit Shah and his son Jay Shah (in photo) were malicious.

The BJP said the article is "malicious and defamatory" and seeks to damage the reputation of its chief Amit Shah.

Jay Shah said that his "businesses are fully legitimate… and are reflected in my tax records" and that he has repaid loans "by cheque on commercial rate of interest."

Senior union minister Piyush Goyal denied any financial wrongdoing by Mr Shah and said loans to his firms were given in a transparent manner and that the loans were paid back with interest. "Mr Jay Shah carried out fully legitimate and lawful business on commercial land… All transactions went through banking channels and were duly reflected," he said.

The opposition Congress said it demands an investigation into the controversy and accused the government of crony capitalism. "This is the BJP's chief's son…can we expect the Prime Minister to take any action?" asked Congress leader Kapil Sibal.

At a second press conference later in the evening, Mr Sibal questioned why a Mr Goyal, a Central minister, was speaking for Jay Shah. He also denied that the statements made his party were malicious.
