World No 1 Serena Williams is bidding to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to complete a calendar Grand Slam.

World No 1 Serena Williams is bidding to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to complete a calendar Grand Slam.

As expected, World No. 1 Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic cruised through their respective matches in straight sets.
Serena Williams defeated Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia. The Russian, when trailing 0-6, 0-2, retired in visible discomfort, limping off court and was out of the tournament. Williams will now face American qualifier Jessica Pegula in the second round.
Venus Williams on the other hand had a discomforting win over Monica Puig of Costa Rica. After falling behind in the second set, she came back strong in the final set to win 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3.
The sixth-seeded Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic was defeated by 37th-ranked Lesia Tsurenko 6-4,6-1 in just 65 minutes. With Maria Sharapova pulling out of the US Open tennis championships due to a leg injury, half of the top 10 seeds in the women's draw are already out of the US Open.
This will be good news to Serena Williams as the World No. 1 Williams is bidding to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to complete a calendar Grand Slam.
On the other hand, unseeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova beat the 7th seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.The former World No 1's exit was a true shocker.
In men's category World No 1 Novak Djokovic beat Brazilian Joao Souza in straight sets.
After a miserable performance in the Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal didn't have a comfortable victory. He managed to progress to the second round by defeating Borna Coric of Croatia 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Kei Nishikori, who won the Citi Open title this year, was ousted from the tournament. Unseeded Benoit Paire of France defeated last year's finalist 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in five-sets.
Roger Federer and Andy Murray, two of the hottest players on the US hardcourts during the run-up to the US Open, face difficult tests right from the start.
Federer who beat world number one Novak Djokovic in the Cincinnati final will face 34th-ranked Leonardo Mayer of Argentina. Third seeded Murray, who defeated Djokovic in Montreal final will face number 37 Nick Kyrgios, who defeated Stan Wawrinka in Montreal earlier this year.
