'Captain Cool' MS Dhoni isn't known for wearing his emotions on his sleeve, but it turns out even he was a little emotional when he told his teammates in the dressing room about his decision to retire from Test cricket.
According to Indian Express, a teary-eyed Dhoni gathered his teammates for an impromptu huddle before he told them that the just-ended Melbourne Test was to be his last in the format of the game, leaving them astonished and devastated.
"Two minutes into his address, Dhoni broke down, tears running down his cheeks. Many around him had misty eyes. The emotional scenes continued for a while as Dhoni exchanged hugs with everyone in the Indian camp," noted the report.
Cricket lovers were equally shocked a little later when they came to learn of his decision following a BCCI's press release.
The Indian captain of six years abruptly retired from Tests after having helped his team draw the third match of the series against Australia but lost lost the current Test series.
A Times of India report quoted BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel as saying, "Someone who was present in the dressing room told me that he (Dhoni) was a bit emotional while announcing his decision."
According to the report, the BCCI secretary was at loss for words when Dhoni informed him about his decision. He in fact, tried convincing him to play till the Sydney test but the option was turned down.
However, despite the dramatic announcement that was still to be made public the Indian captain calmly addressed a press conference in which he gave no indication to journalists about his decision.
He spoke about the match, how the team had played and even the series in which his unsuccessful stint as Test captain had continued. His final words at the press conference?
"You don't definitely want to lose a Test match," Dhoni said with characteristic candidness.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings, the IPL team Dhoni plays for, posted this picture of what they said was a 'teary eyed' Dhoni and Suresh Raina soon after his announcement. If he was teary eyed, Dhoni still managed to smile for the camera. Post by Chennai Super Kings.
