NEW DELHI: After taking charge as the new Union Sports Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday said he wanted to make the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports “important and visible.”

Indian Sports Minister – Sarbananda Sonowal

Sonowal, who got to know of his new responsibility on Tuesday morning, was welcomed to his office by his followers and Ministry officials with bouquets and traditional Assamese ‘gamcha’.

The Minister spoke to media persons before meeting top Ministry officials, including Sports Secretary Ajit Sharan and Sports Authority of India (SAI) Director-General Jiji Thomson.

Fifty-one-year-old Sonowal, who was elected from Lakhimpur constituency of Assam, said he would like his ministry to be pro-active. “I need your (media) support and the support of our countrymen to make this ministry important and visible,” said Sonowal.

“I will discuss (different issues) with sports experts and sports personalities of the country to carry out my functions and responsibilities effectively.”

Giving a brief idea about his top priority, Sonowal said, “I want sports personalities to come up from our countryside.”

Sonowal responded positively to a query on whether India could resume its cricketing ties with Pakistan. “We are always interested in developing good relations with our neighbouring countries,” said Sonowal.
