Bangalore: The Indian film industry lost another of its stalwarts when the 94-year-old singer, who had been ailing for the last four months, passed way in the early hours of October 24th. The legendary singer was admitted to the hospital in July this year after he complained of respiratory problems and lung infection.

The legendary singer was admitted to the hospital in July this year after he complained of respiratory problems and lung infection.

Legendary playback singer Manna Dey passed away after a prolonged illness in Bangalore

Dey leaves behind two daughters-Rama and Sumita. His eldest daughter Rama was by his bedside when he passed away while Sumita is supposed to reach Bangalore by tomorrow. Dey's wife Sulochana Kumaran passed away in Bangalore last January after battling cancer for quite some time.

News of Dey's death shocked thousands of his fans and the film fraternity. Amitabh Bachchan who has lip synced many songs sung by Manna Dey wrote on Twitter, "Manna Dey RIP …!! Prayers and condolences to loved ones and family! Strange how we connect events of our life with his songs!". Narendra Modi expressed his condolences with "In Manna Dey, we have lost a legendary singer. His immortal voice will remain with us forever. May his soul rest in peace."

Dey has sung more than 3,500 songs during a career that spanned more than seven decades and began his career in playback singing with the film 'Tamanna' in 1943. He was the recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the National Award twice.

Mannada, whose original name was Prabodh Chandra Dey had sung a variety of songs which include 'Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua' (Shree 420, 1955), 'Ae Meri  Zohra Zabeen' (Waqt, 1965) and 'Ek Chathur Naar' (Padosan, 1968). The music genius's all-time hits include 'Sur Na Saje Kya Gaun Main', 'Puchho Na Kaise Maine Rain Bitayee', 'Laga Chunari Main Daag', 'Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandani Mein Hum', 'Dil Ka Haal Sune Dilwala', 'Ye Raat Bheegi Bheegi, Ye Mast Fizayen' among others.
