MOHALI: Shikhar Dhawan's handling of his bowlers left much to be desired in his first assignment as skipper of Hyderabad Sunrisers. With two left-handers Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne at the crease and going great guns, he did not have the courage to use the two leg-spinners Amit Mishra and Karan Sharma even when the Kandurata Maroons duo was flaying the other bowlers to all parts of the PCA stadium.

And when he finally introduced Mishra in the 15th over, it was for just one over. As a result, the two set batsmen continued to make merry and collected runs at a fast clip. The champion team from Sri Lanka, after being asked to bat first, notched up a healthy total of 168 for three, which will take some getting by the Hyderabad team.

Dhawan, however, made amends with the bat and along with another lefthander Parthiv Patel gave Sunrisers a rollicking century stand (121) that laid the platform for a convincing win. The Sunrisers lefthanded duo overshadowed the Maroons counterparts by a long way. Both Dhawan and Patel were in superb touch from the beginning and went after the bowling with utter disdain so much so that the two reached the 100-run stand in just 64 balls. Patel departed soon and Dhawan followed after a well-compiled 71.

Thereafter, JP Duminy and Thesara Perera struck some lusty blows to complete the chase with clinical efficiency with eight wickets and nine balls to spare.

Sunrisers' main strike bowler Dale Steyn was totally off-colour and was taken for 20 runs in his first two overs. However, Ishant Sharma bowled well to keep The Lankans in check.
