Mumbai: Three days after the brutal Shakti mills gang rape in Mumbai, the police have managed to arrest all five accused. The remaining two culprits were picked up on Sunday.
Police officials escort a suspect, head covered with black cloth right, accused of the gang rape of a photojournalist after producing him before a court in Mumbai, on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013.
The incidence has triggered widespread outrage across the country. The police had come under increasing pressure to find the culprits.
Reacting to the arrests Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has announced that the state will appoint its lawyer in the 26/11 terror cases as public prosecutor. “I have discussed this with him (Ujjwal Nikam). We will get him in this case so that the culprits get the severe punishment for the heinous crime they have committed,” said Mr. Chavan.
Out of the two culprits, Quasim Sheikh was picked up from Mumbai while Salim Ansari was arrested from Delhi.
Sheikh was said to be hiding in Nair Hospital in Mumbai. Ansari had fled to Delhi fearing arrest. According police sources, after the incident he first went to Govandi and later took a train from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus for Delhi. He was hiding in one of his relatives’ houses in Delhi. His relatives had no knowledge about the crime he committed in Mumbai. He will be brought to the city by evening.
Meanwhile, two accused in the case, Siraj Rehman and Sheikh were sent to police custody till August 30 by special holiday court on Sunday.
The remand copy speaks of repeated threats to the young woman both before and after the crime. The accused threatened to kill her male colleague. Later they forced her to clear the site and warned her of dire consequences if she spoke about the incident to anyone. They even claimed they had photographed her and would make this public.
