Pakistan claimed the upper hand after the opening day of the first Test in Johannesburg, dismissing South Africa for just 253 at the Wanderers.
Honours had been even throughout much of the day, with the home side battling to 68 for two at lunch and 159 for four at tea, but the Proteas then collapsed from 232 for five in the evening session.
Mohammad Hafeez finished with figures of four for 16 from just 7.2 overs before he and Nasir Jamshed safely negotiated two overs to reduce their deficit by six runs.
While there seemed to be plenty of life in the pitch for the bowlers, South Africa will be disappointed with their total after the top seven batsmen all made at least 20, with only Jacques Kallis (50) going on to make a half-century.
Captain Graeme Smith (24) was one of two wickets to fall in the morning session in his 100th Test as captain – 99 for his country and one for a World XI side – as Pakistan's bowlers made life difficult for the world number one team.
Alviro Petersen (20) was also back in the pavilion before Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis saw the Proteas through to lunch.
The home side had earlier appeared to have weathered the early storm as Petersen and Smith approached a half-century opening stand, but Petersen then got a leading edge which looped up to third slip off the impressive Junaid Khan with the total on 46.
And it was soon 46 for two as Smith, who had won the toss and opted to bat, edged behind off Umar Gul, giving wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed a simple catch.
Kallis and Amla ensured there were no further losses and the pair looked in good form after lunch, with Kallis reaching his 50 off 74 balls and Amla content to play a typically patient innings.
However, just after reaching his half-century, Kallis (50) miscued a pull shot and was superbly caught in the deep by Asad Shafiq, who dove forward to take an excellent catch at full stretch.
And Amla (37) went just 10 runs later as he was caught off the bowling of Younis Khan as South Africa were reduced to 135 for four.
AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis put on 64 for the fifth wicket before De Villiers (34) became Hafeez's first victim, while Du Plessis (41) was then unlucky to see the ball spin back on to the stumps after he had played a routine defensive shot to Khan.
Hafeez then bowled Peterson for a duck and had Dean Elgar caught behind down the leg side, before South Africa contributed to their own downfall with a comical run-out that saw Vernon Philander stranded well out of his ground.
Dale Steyn made an entertaining 12 not out with one four and a six before Hafeez bowled Morne Morkel for a duck to end the innings.
