A Dalit or 'untouchable' woman was gang-raped and beaten in front of her husband and infant child after their home was broken into by seven robbers.
The victim suffered serious head injuries in the attack and is currently being treated in hospital.
The attack in Purbind Nagar village, near Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, is the latest in a series of gang-rapes reported in India since the attack and subsequent death of a 23 year old student in Delhi provoked protests throughout the country.
The latest case emerged after a 16-year-old girl who set fire to herself after being raped by a gang of youths in Orissa died from her injuries. She had been gang-raped on January 2nd and set fire to herself the following day. She was admitted to hospital in Rayagara, a town in Orissa's tribal belt but died on Tuesday. The attack provoked protests throughout the town, which is close to the Orissa border with Andhra Pradesh.
In the Aligarh attack, the victim's husband told police the men had broken into their home at 2.30 in the morning as he, his wife and their four-year-old son slept in their beds. They had bound and gagged him so he could not protect his wife and then attacked her. They had hit her wife on the head with a brick after she resisted them and then gang-raped her as their son slept.
They took 1,380 Rupees ($25) in cash and some jewelry before raping the woman. Two men have been arrested in connection with the rape and robbery while police are searching for five more suspects.
