SHIMLA: A private professional university setting up its campus in Himachal Pradesh has been accused of violating environmental laws and now faces action, an official said here Thursday.
The Rayat Bahra University campus was Thursday searched by green authorities following reports of violation of environmental norms, Himachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board member secretary Sanjay Sood told IANS.
The Punjab-based University is setting up its campus in Waknaghat in Solan district.
Sood said the university authorities were restrained from constructing the retaining wall. He said despite a notice being issued to the university, it was carrying out the construction activity.
"We will look into all other (environmental) violations done by the university on its campus. It was not complying with our notices and appropriate action would be initiated against it," board chairman Kuldeep Singh Pathania said.
He said other private universities in the state would also be checked for violations of green norms.
Rayat Bahra University is also accused of flattening the hill during the phase-II construction of the campus, located on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway.
"The university authorities have flattened the hill by 10 metres against the permissible limit of 3.5 metres," then chief minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal had said in a written reply to the state assembly last year.
