India is planning to erect a single row fence instead of double row in several areas along the border with Bangladesh. India will erect single row fencing instead of double row fencing in several areas along the border with Bangladesh, officials said in Agartala Tuesday.
About 80 percent of the 856-km India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura has so far been fenced with double rows to check trans-border movement of militants, prevent infiltration, and curb border crimes.
"More than 61 patches of the India-Bangladesh border with Tripura could not be fenced following objections by villagers," a Border Security Force (BSF) spokesperson said.
"Bangladesh has been objecting to the fencing at the zero line," the spokesperson added.
The Tripura government had also asked the central government to build fences at the actual border (zero line) with Bangladesh.
According to international norms and the Indira-Mujib treaty between India and Bangladesh, barbed wire fencing has to be erected 150 yards inside each other's territory from the zero line of the border.
The spokesperson said: "A meeting was held Tuesday between senior officials of the BSF and BGB (Border Guards Bangladesh) at Sidhai in western Tripura, 30 km north of here. The meeting discussed erecting a single row fencing instead of double row fencing in the desired areas."
"BSF officials have handed over the proposal of single row fencing to their Bangladesh counterparts. The BGB would forward the proposal to their government for approval. Senior officials of BGB and BSF would soon jointly visit the areas where the single row fencing would be build," he added.
