Taking the oath our new President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday pledged to “Preserve, protect and defend” the constitution.
He also promised to concentrate and eradicate poverty. “Trickle-down theories do not address the legitimate aspirations of the poor. We must lift those at the bottom so that poverty is erased from the dictionary of modern India,” said Mukherjee.
He was sworn in as the President by Chief Justice S H Kapadia in the Parliament House’s Central Hall early Wednesday. The newly elected president paid his respect to Mahatma Gandhi and the first family of Congress party Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi at their memorials before reaching Rashtrapahi Bhavan.
Addressing the press he also said that fighting against the corruption is like “Fourth World War”—Mr Mukherjee bid farewell to Pratibha Patil and then took her seat after the swearing-in ceremony.
