Dara Singh no more, but his memory lingers on

The news has just broken out that Dara Singh has passed away in his residence this morning.

In what is being seen as a rather sad day for Bollywood the legendary wrestler and yesteryear actor Dara Singh breathed his last at his Mumbai residence after going through a long illness. He was 83.

The news has just broken out that Dara Singh has passed away in his residence this morning.

In what is being seen as a rather sad day for Bollywood the legendary wrestler and yesteryear actor Dara Singh breathed his last at his Mumbai residence after going through a long illness. He was 83.

He had been admitted to the Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after he suffered from a cardiac arrest on 7 July, 2012 and this damaged his brain in a big way. All efforts to save him were futile. He was last seen in the hit movie Jab We Met. He was shifted to his house early this morning.

Dara Singh joined the film industry during the 60s and shot to fame with his role as Hanuman in the TV serial Ramayana.

The actor, who played Hanuman on the television series of Ramayan in 1980s, has breathed his last at around 8:50 am this morning.

For those of you who are not familiar with Dara Singh, there is an official website dedicated only to him (http://www.dara-singh.com/). The website provides detailed information on his life on- and off-camera. Dara Singh had started off as a wrestler and was encouraged to do so due to his massive physique.

He successfully competed against some of the greatest names in wrestling history. Dara Sigh apparently has 500 professional fights to his credit. He retired from active wrestling in 1983.

He started acting in movies in the 1950s. Due to his strong physique, he earned the name of Bollywood's first 'He-man'. He has apparently acted in nearly 118 films. He also starred in the National Award winner film 'Main Maa Punjab Dee'.

Dara Singh was also the owner of a state-of-the-art film studio in Mohali, Punjab. Dara Film Studio, which was founded in 1978, is operational from 1980 as film studio.
