After a gap of 16 years, Home Minister P Chidambaram released a revamped Police Drill Manual which will serve as a foundation for better discipline and uniformity in all forces of the country.
The new manual, formulated by Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), bears significance as the last couple of years have witnessed introduction of new weapons, operational gear, new uniform patterns and various drills and it will provide guidance to the police instructors.
The Home Minister said the police drill plays very crucial role in developing discipline and should be scrupulously followed. Chidambaram said the data on police population ratio, armed police and civilian police and sanctioned posts vis-a- vis vacancies is very useful and relevant. "These need to be updated yearly to monitor the quality of police mechanism and take necessary action," he said.
The Home Minister also appreciated the hard work done by BPR&D officials, Central Armed Police Force and State Police forces in updating these publications which will be useful to the field formations as an important reference book. 'Data on Police Organisations in India' is one of the many initiatives of the BPR&D to present, to all the stakeholders in the Criminal Justice System in general and police officials in particular, such information that gives them access to and an insight into basic and vital statistics about police administration all over the country.
It is a source of valuable data about police that can be put to diverse use such as planning infrastructure, undertaking research projects as also objective and empirical inputs for policy decisions in respect of police and policing in the country.
