Ravindra Jadeja completed his eighth career five-wicket haul on the second day of the third Test in Ranchi with the dismissal of Nathan Lyon on Friday.
Jadeja was a lone act for India by keeping Australia’s progress in check with his wickets. His first scalp, in the form of David Warner, was a slice of luck after the Australian opener slammed a full toss back at him. However, Jadeja was more disciplined overall even though the prized wicket of Australia captain Steve Smith eluded him.
Not only he bowled the most overs and bagged the highest number of maidens in Australia's first innings, Jadeja also had the lowest economy at less than three. His first wicket on the second day was that of Glenn Maxwell who reached his maiden Test century.
Jadeja’s delivery was a little short, prompting Maxwell to place it through covers, but it turned enough to take an edge off his bat to Wriddhiman Saha behind the stumps. It was a timely dismissal from India’s point of view since Australia were looking to break loose with centurions at the crease.

Matthew Wade was bent on deploying the sweep against Jadeja more often but the left-arm spinner persisted with his length deliveries. In one particular delivery, Wade had already committed himself to a forward defensive shot but the ball held its line and Saha took the catch.
Pat Cummins, playing his first Test in six years, was clearly not ready to handle Jadeja’s spin as he was drawn forward only to find the delivery turning away to take his off-stump. The wait for his fifth wicket was a little longer.
Lyon was drawn into another loopy delivery that bounced more to hit the top of the bat, Karun Nair took the catch at silly point as Jadeja completed his third five-wicket haul against Australia.
