As the Indian automotive space is becoming increasingly more active than it ever has, more and more international car manufacturers are appointing Indians to spearhead their operations in the country, primarily due to the better understanding by such individuals of the way the market works in India.

As the Indian automotive space is becoming increasingly more active than it ever has, more and more international car manufacturers are appointing Indians to spearhead their operations in the country, primarily due to the better understanding by such individuals of the way the market works in India.

The most recent of such changes was announced just earlier this week, when Vikram Pawah was appointed as the President of BMW Group India. Prior to his appointment, he has held numerous leadership positions in both automotive (including Harley-Davidson and Honda) and non-automotive companies. Also, towards the end of 2016, the Head of Audi India, Joe King, was replaced by Rahil Ansari, who used to head Global Pricing for Audi Genuine Parts for Audi AG after-sales.

The case is the same with the Volkswagen Group as Skoda, Porsche, Lamborghini and most other brands under the VW umbrella, are all headed by Indian professionals.
After Ford India Chief Nigel Harris being moved to a position in China, the American manufacturer is reportedly eager to appoint an Indian national as the President and MD for India.
With all these automotive majors appointing Indians in key leadership positions, it is clear to see that the companies are hoping the local knowledge and understanding of these individuals will help them improve their sales performance in the Indian car market.
