WASHINGTON: China is pursuing a massive military modernization aimed at winning "local wars under conditions of informatisation," and is actively using Western dual use technologies to upgrade its defense capabilities, the US Defense Department has said.

The world's "most active and persistent" perpetrators of economic espionage, Chinese agencies also represent a "growing" threat to US economic security, the Pentagon said in a Congress mandated report.

Houston: After several months of consistent campaigning, Indian-American Himesh Gandhi has been elected to a city council in the US state of Texas.

35-year-old Gandhi, elected to an 'At Large' seat on the the Sugar Land City Council, received 2,468 votes (52.11%) while Naomi Fulan Lam, a real estate broker, was in second place with 1,525 votes (32.20%).

Houston Community College administration and Sugar Lands Building Standards commissioner Bill Cathey was third with 743 ballots (15.69%).

New York: Eight Indian-Americans are among the recipients of this year's Ellis Island Medal of Honor presented to more than 100 immigrants for their community service.

The eight, Peter Bheddah, Ravishankar Bhooplapur, Dr. Sanjiv Chopra, Dr. Leena N. Doshi, Dr. Surendra V. Jain, Hasu P. Shah, Rajendra Singh and Dr. John P. Thomas were presented the medal at a ceremony on the island in New York.
