Washington — Four Indian-American researchers figure among 96 named by President Barack Obama as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest US honour for young professionals.

"Discoveries in science and technology not only strengthen our economy, they inspire us as a people." Obama said announcing the awards Monday. "The impressive accomplishments of today's awardees so early in their careers promise even greater advances in the years ahead."

After two rounds of rate cuts last month, petrol price was today hiked by 70 paise per litre on firming international oil rates.

Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 68.48 per litre with effect from midnight tonight as compared to Rs 67.78 a litre now, state-owned oil companies announced today.

Surpassing China and Britain, India has become the largest source of permanent migrants for Australia.

"India has surpassed China and the United Kingdom as the largest source of permanent migrants with 25,509 and 25,274 places respectively." Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese said in a press statement here Friday.

"Indian migrants comprised a total of 29,018 places or 15.7 percent of the total migration of 185,000 places under the 2011-12 permanent migration programme," he added.

The electoral college for the July 19 presidential poll comprises 4,896 voters - 776 members of parliament and 4,120 members of the state assemblies. Between them they have 10,97,012 votes and the winning candidate needs at least 50 percent of these.

With the Trinamool Congress now backing UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee he is clearly emerging a winner.

NEW DELHI—Rajesh Khanna, whose success as a romantic lead in scores of Indian movies made him Bollywood's first superstar, died Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 69.

His wife, actress Dimple Kapadia, and two daughters were at his bedside when he died at his home in Mumbai, said his son-in-law, actor Akshay Kumar.

The six Indian women athletes, who were caught for steroid doping last year, lost their case in the Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland as it upheld the IAAF's appeal to impose two-year ban on them.

A NADA panel had handed a lenient one-year ban on the six quartermilers, including Asian Games double gold medallist Ashwini Akkunji, on the ground that they did not know that the food supplement they have been provided by their coach contain prohibited substance.
