PUNE: Among the articles actor Sanjay Dutt will carry home after walking out of Pune’s Yerwada Central Prison on Thursday will be a clutch of paper bags he prepared while serving time.

An inmate, according to the prison manual, must work for the period he spends inside jail. Authorities pay the prisoners based on their skills.
The Bollywood star has served about 42 months of his five-year sentence at the Pune prison after he was convicted of possessing illegal arms in a case linked to the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
While the actor earned Rs 38,000— Rs 50 per working day— during his time in jail by making paper bags, he spent most of the money buying items of daily use from the prison canteen.
So, Dutt will be paid the balance amount of Rs 450 on the day he is released, said a senior prison officer.
Sources said his pay was calculated after excluding the days of leave on parole and furlough granted to him on several occasions since 2013.
The 56-year-old spent Wednesday quietly inside the jail though sources said he appeared happy. Dutt was distant all through the five years, officers said, and did not speak much to any of the inmates.
Jail superintendent UT Pawar said Dutt will be released on Thursday morning after completing some official procedure.
Responding to allegations that jail authorities regarded the actor as a celebrity, Pawar said Dutt was treated like any other convict and any reduction of his sentence was worked out in compliance with jail guidelines.
