New Delhi — Maternal and child health wings will be set up in district hospitals and medical colleges and comprehensive medical check-ups for children will take place across the country, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Friday.

"The government is now funding the creation of maternal and child health wing, which will improve the bed capacity in district hospitals and medical colleges overburdened with increased delivery," he said.

"Steps have also been taken to create networks of ambulances for covering remote and inaccessible areas," he added.

Besides free drugs for pregnant women and sick newborns, funds would be given for purchase of drugs for all types of illness for patients coming to government health facilities, he said.

The minister said improving the health of mother and child was vital to increasing equity and reducing poverty.

In addition, comprehensive medical check-ups for children across the country would be initiated under the universal screening of children, which will cover about 13 crore children.
