Indian captain Rohit Sharma set a massive world record during the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final between India and England on Thursday (July 27) at the Providence Stadium in Guyana after he walked out to open the batting for the Men in Blue following Jos Buttler’s decision to bowl first on winning the toss in a rain-hit game.

Rohit continued his dream run of form following a stunning knock of 92 in 41 balls in the final Super 8 stage against Australia in St. Lucia on Monday. Despite Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant’s early departure, Rohit looked in fine touch and gave India an aggressive start before a rain break.

Rohit was unbeaten on 37 in 26 balls when rain stopped play after eight overs in the first innings, with Suryakumar Yadav batting with him. The Indian captain has hit six boundaries in his knock so far.

Rohit Sharma Creates Massive World Record

Rohit broke Mahela Jayawardene’s record for the most fours hit by any batter in the history of the competition, with 113 boundaries to his name. Jayawardene held the record for a long period of time, having hit 111 fours in his career for Sri Lanka in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Most Four’s In T20 World Cup History

Player T20 World Cup Fours Innings
Rohit Sharma (India) 113* 43
Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) 111 31
Virat Kohli (India) 105 32
David Warner (Australia) 103 41
Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) 101 34

Rohit is one of two players alongside Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, who has played in every edition of the tournament. Rohit won the inaugural edition when MS Dhoni-led India lifted the title.

As far as the match is concerned, the game started 75 minutes after the scheduled start of play and has seen another delay of more than an hour, but no overs have been lost due to an extraordinary four hours and 10 minute extra provided by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to complete the game.

It is worth noting that there is no reserve day in the match, and if the match is washed out, India will qualify for the final against South Africa on Saturday (June 29) in Barbados.
