In an attempt to seek refuge from their almost rabid popularity, the legendary rock band, The Beatles, came down to Rishikesh five decades ago.
Huddled comfortably in one of their songs, Across the Universe, are the lines Jai Gurudeva Om, which demonstrate the ties the song had with Indian culture. Cut to now, and we see Mumbai going berserk over news of British rock band, Coldplay, hitting Indian shores to shoot for a video.
Six-time Grammy award winner and EDM sensation, Skrillex, who is set to perform in Mumbai on October 10 as part of Supersonic Arcade, reached Goa four days prior to his concert, sparking rumours of collaboration with an Indian artiste. Quiz him on who he would like to work with and he says, "Definitely, Yo Yo Honey Singh. He's blowing up on the dubstep scene right now and his stuff is pretty cool."
Taking a cue, we scan this crossover trend and take a look at other artistes who came down to India to shoot their music videos.
Iggy Azelea: Bounce
The Aussie pop star, who has been steadily climbing the charts, shot for her video on the streets of Mumbai. It had all the elements of a typical Bollywood music video — colourful costumes and filmy dance moves. Iggy even showcased some feisty dance in a traditional lehenga atop an elephant. The video was as desi as desi gets.
Mumford and Sons: Cave
Living up to their cult Indie status, the band shot for their song on the beaches of Goa. It encapsulated the fun, free-spirited and invigorating vibe the place has to offer. Needless to say, the song was a hit and earned four Grammy nominations.
Major Lazer & DJ Snake feat MØ: Lean On
Shot at Karjat and Vasai, this song was quite the rage. It had a peppy vibe to it apart from colourful costumes and background dancers strutting to Bollywood moves. It was one of the most searched songs of the year. It was also chosen as the official song of the 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. Talk about making waves.
Imogen Heap feat. Vishal/Shekhar: Minds Without Fear
Not only was this shot in India, it was also a collaboration between an internationally famed songwriter and composer duo Vishal and Shekhar. The lyrics, based on a poem by Rabindranath Tagore, took the musicians to obscure roads and villages for the shoot. The track did exceptionally well across the globe.
East meets West
Sunidhi Chauhan with Enrique Iglesias
What happens when Latino pop sensation comes together with India’s leading playback singer? It’s music to the ears — literally. The two came together for a song called Heartbeat that saw Sunidhi crooning the Hindi lines.
AR Rahman and Mick Jagger
This could possibly go down in history. The legendary Rolling Stones rocker came together with one of India’s greatest musicians for a song called Satyameva Jayate.
Britney Spears and Sonu Nigam
The singer collaborated with the singer for I Wanna go. Spears even took to Twitter to say that she was extremely excited to be working with Sonu, who wrote and composed bits of the song himself.
