NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said the country can do without both the “social untouchability” that Babasaheb Ambedkar faced during his lifetime and the “political untouchability” he faced after his death.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the project of Dr Ambedkar International Centre will be completed in 20 months.
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Dr Ambedkar International Centre, Modi said Ambedkar stood for all of humanity, and was, in particular, a ray of hope for society’s marginalized and downtrodden sections.
He added that it would be disrespecting Ambedkar if he is viewed only as a “messiah” of the oppressed and said the country’s first law minister had worked for the welfare of the entire humanity. “I think had Ambedkar not been there, where would have been Narendra Modi?” the PM said.
Modi added that despite the social abuse Ambedkar faced during his lifetime, there was not even a trace of malice in the Constitution of India, of which he was the architect.
Noting that the project to set up Dr Ambedkar International Centre had been conceived over 20 years ago, the PM said he was distressed at the delay, but now the work will be completed in 20 months.
