New DELHI – In December last year, PM Modi had issued a stern warning to members of his party, asking them to refrain from making controversial remarks. "I will not compromise on this," he said, according to this NDTV report.

Even though the PM was only referring to communal remarks, after BJP's Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti used expletives in a political rally, Union Minister Giriraj Singh seems to have temporarily ignored the PM when he made a racist comment on TV on Wednesday against Sonia Gandhi.

"If Rajiv Gandhi would've married a Nigerian and Sonia Gandhi wasn't white-skinned, would Congress have accepted her?" asked Singh.

The minister isn't alone. Indian politicians have been creating controversies with their sweeping statements for a while now.

Former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar had to apologies for the use of a colloquial racist slur to describe an African national in an official document. Sharad Yadav called South Indian women "dusky with beautiful bodies." Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh Yadav also spoke about rape, saying 'Boys will be boys, they make mistakes…Will you hang them for rape?'

Singh's comments created an immediate whiplash on Twitter, leading to mixed reactions. Some tweets pointed at his statement being true, and that there was nothing to be offended about, while some tweets openly lashed out at his racist comment. Giriraj Singh is now one of the top trends on Twitter.

Giriraj Singh is one of those politicians who couldn't see others being discussed of Fool's day. He easily proved that his is the winner.

Why pick on Giriraj Singh when his boss Narendra Modi has called Sonia Gandhi a jersey cow and Rahul a hybrid calf http://t.co/fw0Nm6hIXZ

You can't blame Giriraj Singh alone for his racist opinion. He belongs to a state where people start conversation with "Kaun jaat ke ho ji?"
