London's municipal authority has urged organizers of the upcoming London Olympics to rethink their relationship with top games sponsor Dow Chemical Co.
The London Assembly, which scrutinizes the activities of the mayor, argues that Dow has tarnished the reputation of the Olympics because of its links to a company accused in the 1984 gas leak in Bhopal, India.
Dow bought Union Carbide 16 years after the disaster, which killed an estimated 15,000 people. Dow maintains it was not responsible for the catastrophe. Residents in Bhopal are trying to get more compensation for the disaster.
The London Assembly said Wednesday that the IOC needs to consider the environmental and social records of sponsor companies and exclude Dow from future sponsorship deals.
London games organizers could not be immediately reached for comment.
