Taiwanese poet Yu Hsi
The Chinese translation of Tirukkural, a Tamil classic in couplets, and select poems of national poet Subramanya Bharathi has been completed, thanks to the efforts of Tamil University here.
The University had engaged Taiwanese poet Yu Hsi to translate the 1,330 couplets of the Tirukkural and chosen poems of Bharathi and Bharathidasan into Mandarin, the official language of the People’s Republic of China.
While the Chinese translation of Tirukkural and Bharathi’s select poems has been completed, those of poet Bharathidasan are currently being done, Vice-Chancellor M. Thirumalai told The Hindu on the phone.
The Tamil Nadu government had granted Rs. 77.70 lakh for the translation.
The translated works would be published through the Directorate of Tamil Development.
The Chinese translation would pave the way for the Mandarin-speaking population to know the greatness of Tirukkural besides the richness of Bharathi and Bharathidasan’s poems, Mr. Thirumalai said.
The initiative was taken by the Tamil Nadu government, he said. Mandarin.
Mr. Thirumalai said Dr. Yu had returned to the University the Rs. 5-lakh remuneration given to him for the translation.
The University, which has different departments under Arts, Science, Manuscriptology, Developing Tamil and Language faculties, had created a Dr. Yu endowment.
Greek literature
The Vice-Chancellor said the University had proposed to publish four volumes of Greek Literature in Tamil.
The first volume would be published soon. Each volume would run to 700-800 pages.
