WASHINGTON: The female suspect who led US police on a car chase through the streets of Washington from near the White House to Capitol Hill has been pronounced dead, the city's police chief said on Thursday.

Police inspect a car on the median of Constitution Ave in front of the Hart Senate Office Building following reports of a shooting on October 3, 2013 in Washington, DC.

"The suspect in the vehicle, we do know, was struck by gunfire … the suspect has been pronounced," police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters.

Lanier also confirmed that a child, aged about one, was in the car at the time of the incident. That child was "in good condition, and in protective custody," she said.

Shots rang out near the US Capitol building as police intercepted the woman in her black car, sending lawmakers and tourists ducking for cover.

The woman initially tried to get past a barricade at the White House, and was eventually cornered by police after the wild chase.

Lanier said the incident "does not appear in any way to be an accident. This was a lengthy pursuit."

"There were multiple vehicles rammed, there were officers that were struck and two security perimeters that were attempted to be breached," she said.

One police officer was injured and was said to be "doing well," according to Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.
