The Nobel Committee at Swedish Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced on Monday that two scientists shared r the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

The Nobel Committee at Swedish Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced on Monday that two scientists shared r the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka jointly won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine “for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent’ reported Xinhua citing an institute statement.

‘Their findings have revolutionized our understanding of how cells and organisms develop,’ the committee said. ‘The discoveries of Gurdon and Yamanaka have shown that specialized cells can turn back the developmental clock under certain circumstances. These discoveries have also provided new tools for scientists around the world and led to remarkable progress in many areas of medicine,’ the committee added.

The Nobel Prize winners for physics will be announced Tuesday, for chemistry Wednesday, literature Thursday, peace Friday and economics next Monday, the committee said.

The annual Nobel prizes are usually announced in October and are handed out Dec 10, on the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite, who turned philanthropist.

The prizes have been awarded since 1901. A number of 853 persons or organisations have won Nobel prizes from 1901 to 2011 and 199 people have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
