Brief Scorecard: India 174 for 5 (Iyer 62, Rahul 52, Sarkar 2-29) beat Bangladesh 144 (Naim 81, Chahar 6-7, Dube 3-30) by 30 runs

NAGPUR – Shivam Dube bagged 3 wickets in just his 2nd match in India colours, after quickfire fifties from Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to help their side win the 3-match series vs Bangladesh 2-1 in Nagpur on Sunday.

Chasing 175 to win in Nagpur, Mohammad Naim (81) and Mohammad Mithun (27) laid a strong platform with a 98-run stand for the 3rd wicket that threatened to take the game away from India.

This was after Deepak Chahar’s initial burst of 1-0-1-2 where he removed Liton Das (9) and Soumya Sarkar (0) off successive deliveries to lift India early.

Unperturbed by the wickets, Naim and Mithun took their time initially before launching into the Indian attack. The duo was particularly severe on newbie Shivam Dube and Yuzvendra Chahal, who were bludgeoned for a total of 61 runs in their combined 1st five overs.

In the process, Naim also completed his maiden T20I fifty off 33 balls as Bangladesh crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over. But the reintroduction of Chahar worked wonders for India as the seamer induced a top edge from Mithun to break the threatening stand.

On the very next ball bowled by Dube, talismanic batsman Mushfiqur Rahim played on without scoring to put brakes on the scoring rate.

That was just the start to a memorable evening for Dube, who followed his maiden wicket with 2 more in the 16th as he bowled Naim with a yorker before completing a brilliant caught and bowled of Afif Hossain (0) to leave Bangladesh reeling.

Soon, Chahal returned to castle Mahmudullah (8) as the asking rate kept on climbing for Bangladesh. From there on, it was a matter of completing the formalities for India as Chahar and Khaleel closed out the victory without any further drama.

Earlier, put in to bat after losing the toss, Shreyas Iyer (62) and KL Rahul (52) smashed sublime half-centuries to propel India to 174 for 5. While it was a maiden T20I half-century for Iyer, Rahul hit his 6th 50 in the format. India made an unexpected call by dropping a bowler in Krunal Pandya for middle-order batsman Manish Pandey – a decision which would come back to haunt them briefly during Bangladesh’s chase.

The hosts were dealt a huge blow in the 2nd over when Shafiul Islam bowled their skipper Rohit Sharma (2). At the other end, Shikhar Dhawan (19) made his intentions clear with a flurry of boundaries early on, but perished in the same fashion trying to go for quick runs – caught in the deep by Mahmudullah.

India once again could not get to a good start batting first, struggling to 41 for two in six overs. It would have been three down at that stage if Aminul Islam had not dropped a regulation catch off incoming batsman Iyer at backward point. Rahul and Iyer gave a much-needed boost to the Indian innings with a 59-run stand.

Rahul completed his fifty off 33 balls before getting caught at mid-off two balls later, leaving India at 94 for three in the 13th over. Iyer, who was dropped on 0, went ballistic after Rahul’s departure. He was especially brutal against the spinners and hit three sixes over long-on off Afif Hossain. Iyer raced to his 50 off 27 balls and ended up hammering 5 sixes and 3 boundaries.

Rishabh Pant (6), who was already under pressure from all quarters failed to get going in his short stay as part-timer Soumya Sarkar ended his misery by deceiving him with a slower ball which completely missed his bat before rattling the stumps. Iyer, too fell in the same over giving India some jitters late into the innings. Pandey (22 not out off 13), playing his first game of the series, came up with welcome boundaries in the death overs to take the total beyond 170.
