NEW DELHI – Hours after Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rally here, the BJP hit back strongly. It raked up the alleged land deals involving Robert Vadra in Haryana and Rajasthan and asked if they were in the interest of the farmers.

Replying to Rahul’s barb that Modi was interested in “Take in India”, the BJP said most of the “Take in India” happened during the UPA rule.

“Rahul Gandhi has become an expert in indulging in shallow talk. (He says) it is not ‘Make in India’ but ‘Take in India’. Rahulji, ‘take in India’ happened the most during your (UPA) rule. It happened in 2G (spectrum allocation), Commonwealth Games, coal… no decision was taken without taking. Therefore, you remember take in India,” Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

At the rally, Rahul accused Modi of trying to snatch the land and rights of farmers.

The BJP fielded Prasad hours after the Congress rally. He said several CMs of Congress-ruled states had supported changes in the UPA government’s 2013 land acquisition Act and argued development was difficult without the amendments. The Niti Aayog, he said, has suggested that states be given flexibility in land law and the issue is under consideration of the Centre.

In a counter attack, he asked: “Were farmers respected under the Vadra model of development where land was bought at cheap rates and sold at higher prices?”

He said the previous Congress government in Haryana had acquired land for 37 special economic zones during the 10 years when it was in power. “So far, only six have become operational. What happened to the rest. Where is the land (acquired for them),” he asked. “Congress always wanted to keep the farmer impoverished. We want to strengthen them,” he added.
